Mental health - A person’s emotional and psychological well being in which they can cope with normal stresses and function in society
Mental health problem/illness - Diagnosable conditions in which a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours change and they are less able to cope/function.

International classification of disease version 10 (ICD10) is a diagnostic manual which is used across Europe to diagnose mental illness.
In the USA they use the DSM-5 – diagnostics and statistics manual of mental disorders.
Some mental health illnesses are called culture bound because they are only recognized in certain cultures.

In Western society hearing voices is a symptom of mental health problems such as schizophrenia, but it is a positive experience in India and Africa
Signs and symptoms are focused on illness instead of health. Instead Jahoda suggested we look for signs of mental health. She listed six characteristics e.g. accurate perception of reality and autonomy.
