    The amnion is a membrane that surrounds and protects the developing embryo in the womb.

    The inner mass of the blastocyst.
  • What is the role of the amniotic fluid?
    Protects the foetus during development by: maintaining temperature, provides lubrication, contributes to lung development, allows movement and acts as a shock absorber.
  • What are the functions of progesterone and oestrogen during pregnancy?
    Prevents menstruation, stops LH/FSH production and prevents contraction of the myometrium.
  • What does oestrogen stimulate during pregnancy?
    The growth of the uterus and growth/development of the mammary glands.
