  • Head is the complete sewing machine without a cabinet or stand.
    Arm is the curve part of the head containing mechanism for operating the needle.
    Bed is the flat portion of the machine and beneath is the feed dog where it is mounted, and the shuttle and lower thread are placed.
  • Spool Pin is the thread holder.
    Thread Guide keeps the thread in position.
    Thread Take up Lever releases the thread and interlocks with the bobbin thread.
    Presser bar lifter moves the presser foot.
    Tension controls the looseness and tightness of stitches.
  • Balance Wheel sets the mechanism in motion.
    Belt connects the balance wheel to the drive wheel.
    Stop Motion Screw hinders moving when loosened and starts.
    Feed Dog moves the fabric while sewing.
    Throat plate is the windows of the feed dog and it is where the bobbin threads come out.
  • Pitman Rod holds the treadle to band wheel crank.
    Belt Guide holds the belt to its place.
    Belt Shifter removes the belt from the wheel.
    Dress Guard protects the dress from the wheel.
    Treadle is where the feet are stationed to drive the band wheel through the pitman rod.
  • Legs support the cabinet of the machine.
    Cabinet holds the head of the machine by interlocking screw on the hinges.
    Measuring Tools and Aids - The tools used for measuring are the ruler, tape measure, meter stick, French curve, and hip curve.
    Pinning Tools- For pins, use dressmakers’ or silk pins. They have sharp points and will not leave marks on the fabric. Pincushions are used to keep needles and pins handy while working.
  • Sewing scissors – pointed for trimming and clipping work. The two handles are of the same size.
    Shears – used for cutting fabrics. The two handles are shaped differently to fit the hand comfortably.
    Pinking or scalloping shears – used to cut the decorative edge that reduces raveling of fabric.
    Seam ripper – aids in removing stitches from fabrics; lifts thread away from fabric before cutting.
  • Tracing Wheel – used with tailor’s carbon to transfer pattern markings to fabric.
    Tailor’s carbon paper – used with a tracing wheel to create a temporary marking on fabric.
    Tailor’s chalk – an oil-free chalk for transferring markings.
    Darning threads and needle – used to make tailor’s tacks.
  • Flat iron – an electrically heated appliance for flattening, creasing, and shaping fabric.
    Ironing board – a padded flat surface for ironing and pressing. This resists the heat of the iron.
  • Needle Bar holds the needle in place.
    Needle Clamp holds and tightens the needle.
    Presser Foot holds the fabric in place while sewing.
    Needle is a slender tool attached in the needle clamp used for sewing.
    Bobbin Winder controls the bobbin while winding thread.
    Stitch regulator checks the length of the stitches.
  • Slide plate is a movable plate that covers the shuttle and bobbin case.
    Shuttle holds the bobbin case while sewing.
  • Pressing cloth – used to cover fabric while pressing.
  • Hand Sewing Needles – various needles are designed for specific purposes. They vary in shape and eye shape. There are four basic categories: general hand sewing, needlecraft, darning, and heavy-duty sewing.
  • Needle threader – makes threading of needle easier.
  • Thimble – used for pushing the needle through the material.
  • Bobbin is a metal spool for winding thread.
  • Bobbin Case holds the bobbin
  • Band Wheel leads the balance wheel through the belt connection.
  • Band Wheel Crank moves the band wheel.
