Electromagnetic Spectrum

Cards (6)

  • Electromagnetic radiation is classified according to wavelength/frequency
  • The Spectrum
  • For all waves, frequency is inversely proportional to wavelength
    • EM waves with the shortest wavelength will have the highest frequency
    • EM waves with the longest wavelength will have the lowest frequency
  • The higher the frequency the greater the energy of the EM wave
  • When visible light (white light) is passed through a glass prism or rainbow, it splits into a continuous spectrum of colours
    • The "7" colours that appear are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
    • Each colour has a specific wavelength and frequency
    • Red light has the longest wavelength
    • Violet light has the shortest wavelength
