  • Water Source:
    • When lipids are chemically broken down, water is released through that reaction acting as a water source
  • Protection:
    • To protect organs such as the heart and kidneys there is a layer of fat that surrounds them
  • Insulation:
    • The fat that is stored underneath the skin and it acts as an insulator against body heat and provides warmth
  • Absorption:
    • Vitamins A and D dissolve in fats. They can also be absorbed into the intestines
  • Buoyancy:
    • The fat stored in the animal gives the animal buoyancy and warmth
  • Structure:
    • Fats (phospholipids) form part of all membranes
  • Energy:
    • Fat is stored in plant seeds which can be used for energy in the future
  • Waterproofing:
    • Waxes are able to waterproof plant and animal cuticles because they are a type of lipid.
