Module 1

Cards (7)

  • The physical forces,Intermolecular forces, governs the interaction between molecules.
  • A. Ion-ion interaction - attraction between ions.
  • B. Ion Dipole Interaction - very evident when pouring water molecules around sodium ions which is the case when dissolvimg sodium chloride in water.
  • C. Dipole-dipole interaction - interaction of the two dipole molecules such as between molecules of carbon monoxide, hydrochloric acid, and nitrogen diflouride.
  • D. Hydogren Bond Interaction - hydrogen is partially positive and is attracted to flourine, nitrogen, oxygen which are partially negative.
  • E. London dispersion Interaction/ Van der Waals Intermolecular forces - present in all types of molecules whether ionic or covalent-polar or nonpolar.
  • Relative strength of intermolecular forces: Strongest to weakest attractive forces
