    It is a genre of academic writing that briefly summarizes and critically evaluates a work or concept
  • critique contains a careful evaluation mainly on the following elements of a narrative: characterization, setting, conflict, plot, dialogue, theme, and style.
  • why do we need to critique a literary work?
    1.To know its overall value. 2.To determine its strengths and weaknesses.

  • Critical Approach(Literary Criticisms)

    sometimes called "lenses" , are the different perspective we can consnider in analyzing or interpreting text.
  • Structuralist/ Formalist Approach:
  • Structuralist/Formalist Approach: holds that the true meaning of a text can be determined only by analyzing the literary elements of the text and by understanding how these elements work together to form up a cohesive whole.
  • Historical Approach: historical background(when?)
  • Moralist- lesson/moral
  • Feminist- female representation
  • Reader-Response- your own interpretation
  • Marxist- power dynamics ex. rich vs. poor
  • LITERARY ELEMENTS IN FORMALIST APPROACH- Characters(static, dynamic) Settings, and Plot
  • Moralist Approach- It is a type of literary critique that judges the value of the literature based on its moral/lessons or ethical teachings. It determines the worth of literature by seeing if it encourages good out of the reader.
  • Aspects of Moralist Criticism- Literature that is ethically sound and encourages the virtue is praised. Literature that misguides and/or corrupt is condemned.
  • Themes- The main idea or message conveyed through the work of art.
  • Symbolism- A symbol is an object, character, figure, color, or setting that represents something else besides itself.
