  • First aid is immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly taken ill
  • Includes self-help and home care if medical assistance is not available or delayed
  • Goals of First Aid:
    • Alleviate suffering: help to reduce or totally alleviate suffering
    • Prevent further injury or danger: prevent the condition from worsening or causing further harm
    • Prolong life: preserve and sustain life, save the victim from imminent danger
  • Characteristics of a Good First Aider:
    • Gentle: should not cause pain as much as possible
    • Resourceful: make the best use of things at hand
    • Observant: notice all signs and be aware of what is happening and what may happen
    • Tactful: handle the victim with utmost care and in a calm manner
    • Empathic: be comforting
    • Respectable: maintain a professional and caring attitude
  • General Guidelines in Administering First Aid:
    1. Planning of Action: establish based on anticipated needs and available resources
    2. Gathering of needed materials: preparation of equipment and personnel
    3. Initial response (sequence of actions):
    • A: Ask for help
    • I: Intervene. Give appropriate interventions
    • D: Do no further harm
    4. Survey the scene:
    • Is the scene safe for you and the injured person?
    • What happened?
    • How many people are injured?
    • Are there someone who can help?
    • Get consent before giving first aid care
  • Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique useful in emergencies like heart attack or near drowning, where someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped
  • Conditions when CPR is needed:
    • The victim is unconscious
    • Pulse is weak or no pulse
    • No breathing or difficulty in breathing
    • Cardiac arrest caused by Coronary Heart Disease, Dysrhythmias, Respiratory arrest, Electrocution, Drowning, Choking, and Trauma
  • Chest Compressions:
    • A cycle of chest compression is composed of 30 compressions at a rate of 80-100 per minute
    • After a cycle, 2 rescue breaths are administered
  • Prior to the arrival of trained medical assistance, first aid is the medical care provided to a person who has suffered an accident or acquired a sudden illness
  • First aid's main objectives are to decrease pain, quicken the healing process, and minimize harm
  • When first aid is administered correctly, it can prevent both permanent harm and long-term disability
