  • salience
    the behaviour takes over a wide range of life activities e.g friends, partner, job
  • euphoria
    experience from behaviour e.g. the buzz, the rush you get from the addiction
  • tolerance
    need to increase behaviour to feel the same feeling
  • withdrawal
    unpleasant feelings when deprived of the feeling from the addiction
  • conflict
    conflict with others who don't share the same salience, tends to be conflict with their partner.
  • relapse
    hard to give up addictive behaviour, but easy to take up again
  • cognitive dissonance - where an individuals attitudes and behaviours conflict with eachother
    this can lead to the individual changing either their attitude or behaviour to lower levels of discomfort and to restore balance
