Topic 6 - Aerobic/anaerobic

Cards (7)

  • Aerobic energy production takes place in the presence of oxygen
  • Anaerobic energy is produced in the absence of oxygen
  • Aerobic:
    • Equation: Glucose + Oxygen = Energy + carbon dioixde+ water
    • Oxygen present: Yes
    • Duration: Long
    • Intensity: Low
    • Sporting example: marathon running
  • Anaerobic:
    • Equation: Glucose = Energy + latic acid
    • Oxygen present: No
    • Duration: Short
    • Intensity: High
    • Sporting example: 100m sprint
  • Give positives and negatives of AEROBIC respiration
    Positives:
    • lots of energy can be produced this way and there are few harmful by-products created
    • can work for a long period of time
    Negatives:
    • takes time for oxygen to be delivered to the working muscles so we can't work at high intensities
  • Give positives and negatives of ANAEROBIC respiration
    Positives:
    • energy can be produced quickly and can be used at high intensities
    Negatives:
    • latic acid is produced
  • Say whether these sports use aerobic or anaerobic respiration:
    • 100m sprint =anaerobic
    • marathon = aerobic
    • long jumper = anaerobic
    • discus = anaerobic
    • XC skiing = aerobic
