design argument - william paley - theologian - 1700s/18th century
william paley - the world must have an intelligent designer. it cannot be random
design argument = teleological argument
the universe is more complicated than a watch. "if the world is more complex than a watch, and the watch is too complex to have happened at random; then how could we assume that the world has happened at random"
teleological - completed. God created the world as completed
theologian - people who study the existence of God
TELEOLOGICAL ARGUMENT (design):
an intelligent designer planned and created the world and everything in it to be perfect and complete
how humans came to be: they are part of the perfect design of the universe and were made by the Intelligent Designer
purpose of humans = distinct purpose. God has designed us in a specific way. everything that exists on earth has a purpose given by God
