  • To conduct chromatography, draw a horizontal line about 1 cm above the bottom of the chromatography paper
  • Place a small spot of the coloured mixture onto the pencil line and allow it to dry
  • Add spots of pure coloured pigments alongside the mixture spot to compare
  • Lower the paper into a beaker with a small amount of a suitable solvent, ensuring it doesn't touch the spots or cover the pencil line
  • Observe as the solvent rises up the paper and reaches the spots on the pencil line
  • The solvent will dissolve the pigments in the spots, causing them to move and separate into spots or ovals vertically above their starting position
