  • Nectaries are structures that release an aqueous fluid (nectar) with a high sugar content (sucrose, fructose, glucose)
  • Floral nectaries - directly associated with pollination
  • Extrafloral nectaries - not usually associate with pollination
  • Nectariferous tissues - tissues composing the nectary (epidermis + specialized parenchyma)
  • Nectar is released through modified stomata (always open)
  • Nectar is produced by secretory cells in the nectary of the flower.

    • Dense cytoplasm
    • Small Vacuoles
    • Numerous mitochondria
    • ER highly developed
    • Numerous Golgi bodies
