Gender equality

Cards (5)

  • B- Women cannot be leaders/priests in the Roman Catholic Church.
E- St Paul was writing to the Corinthians he told them: “women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak"
E- Still many people who would feel that since Jesus had only male disciplines, and since all the leaders of the church through history have been male then it seems that only men should be in leadership. - disagree
  • Evangelicans believe women should not preach or lead a church. For example, St Paul says “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man“. Therefore, women should not have authority in church but should instead carry out their stereotypical gender roles in which being the husband is the provider and the wife is the homemaker.
  • Some Christians believe in equality before God. An example being, "there is no male and female for you are all one in Christ Jesus". This reveals that all individuals are equal regardless of their gender.
  • In all Orthodox synagogues men pray seperately to women. Women are relegated to an upstairs gallery. For example, a blessing Orthodox Jewish men are required to say every day is to give thanks to God " who has not made me a woman". This quote is very sexist and shows that men have more authority than women and are more superior as they are the man- the head of the family (the one in charge.)
  • Some Jews believe that "God created man in his own image". Therefore, the creation of both men and women suggest they are equal.
