  • The UK has global power and influence through its involvement in key international organisations:
  • The United Nations (UN)
    • Set up in 1945 after WWII to prevent war and solve global problems.
    • Has 193 member countries.
    • The UK joined in October 1945.
    • The UK is one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, which gives it veto power on resolutions it disagrees with.
  • The UN General Assembly and Agencies
    • The General Assembly discusses global issues and recommends solutions.
    • The UN has agencies that work in specific areas:
    • Human Rights Council – promotes human rights worldwide.
    • World Food Programme – provides emergency aid in disaster areas.
    • UNICEF – protects children’s rights and supports young people globally.
  • Functions of the UN
    • Maintain international peace and security
    • Protect human rights
    • Deliver humanitarian aid
    • Promote sustainable development
    • Uphold international law
  • The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
    • Formed in 1949 to protect Western nations from aggression.
    • Had 29 members in 2018. The UK is a founding member.
    • Aims to guarantee freedom and security through negotiation and military means if needed.
    • Involved in recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, tackling terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
  • The Commonwealth
    • Made up of 53 member states, formerly part of the British Empire.
    • Queen Elizabeth was head until 2018, succeeded by Prince Charles.
    • Promotes:
    • Economic, social and sustainable development
    • Democracy and peace
    • Environmental protection
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
    • An international body focused on trade between countries.
    • Established in 1995, with 164 members.
    • The UK has been a member since 1995.
    • It:
    • Sets rules for international trade
    • Helps resolve disputes between countries
    • Aims to make trade free, open and transparent
