  • United Nations (UN)
    Benefits:
    • The UK is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, giving it global influence.
    • UN action can prevent conflict and bring countries together.
    • UK gets the support of official help in crises.
    • Membership strengthens the UK’s global role and reputation.
    Commitments:
    • The UK has to pay membership fees to the UN.
    • It must work with other members to resolve conflict.
    • It has to agree to the decisions made by the UN.
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
    Benefits:
    • UK is part of a military alliance which helps deter attacks.
    • NATO membership makes the UK more likely to receive help if attacked.
    • Strengthens the UK’s defence and security.
    Commitments:
    • The UK is committed to sending troops in defence of NATO countries if needed.
    • Must spend at least 2% of its GDP on funding NATO.
  • Commonwealth
    Benefits:
    • Promotes international cooperation and shared values (democracy, human rights).
    • UK benefits from strong relationships with other member countries.
    • Helps UK’s global reputation and influence.
    Commitments:
    • The Commonwealth Charter commits the UK to protecting the environment, human rights and democracy.
    • The UK must promote the Commonwealth’s aims.
    • The UK gave £500m to tackle malaria and £6m to reduce plastic waste.
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
    Benefits:
    • Trade is fairer and smoother for UK companies.
    • UK goods face fewer restrictions when trading.
    • All members get "most favoured nation" status, preventing unfair trade.
    Commitments:
    • UK must resolve trade disputes via WTO rules.
    • Must abide by WTO decisions.
    • Cannot give special treatment to some countries (no favouritism).
