• Humans rely on the Earth's resources to provide them with warmth , shelter , food and transport
• Where do all of our resources come from?

  Earth's crust , oceans or atmosphere
• Timber is an example of a renewable resource that comes from the Earth
• Metal ores are an example of a finite resource that comes from the Earth
• Finite resources must be used with great care
• Care must be taken to ensure that the planet does not become too polluted
• In the past, natural resources were sufficient enough to provide the human population with food, timber, clothing and fuels
• As the population has increased , humans have began to rely on agriculture to supplement or even replace some natural resources
• How does Chemistry play an important role in improving agricultural and industrial processes?

  Chemistry allows new products to be produced and contributes towards sustainable development
• Sustainable development meets the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
• The yield of some natural resources can be improved by agricultural methods
• Cotton, wheat, timber and biofuels are all products of agriculture
• Sugar cane is a renewable resource , as it can be grown every year
• Crude Oil is a finite resource , as it takes millions of years to form
• Coal is a finite resource , as it takes millions of years to form
• Wood is a renewable resource , as it takes around 10 years to form
• Cotton is a renewable resource , as it can be grown every year
• Many products that used to be made from renewable resources are now being made from finite resources.
