  • Background
    Korea was freed from Japanese control in 1945 and it was split into effectively two countries
    • The People's democratic Republic of Korea (North)
    • The Republic of Korea (South)
    The 38th parallel was an agreed division between North and South
    Both sides received support and military equipment
    • North from the Soviet union
    • South from the USA
    Both leaders claimed to be the ruler of the whole country
  • The USA wanted to protect South Korea from falling to the communists, as it feared there would be a 'domino effect' in Europe of other countries becoming communist if that were to happen.
