  • 25 June 1990: North Korea invades South
    (The UN meet to discuss what to do at the request of the USA)
    • The USSR was not present at this meeting, and so did not have a lot of control over the decisions made
  • North Korea was ordered to withdraw by the UN, but refused so a force of 16 countries was put together to help the South.
    • The troops were commanded by General Douglas Macarthur - he pushes the North Korean forces back across the 38th parallel and continues his advance until near the Chinese border.
    Chinese then enter the war and push the UN forces out of North Korea
  • Chinese leader: Mao Zedong
    • Did not want to see communist allies be defeated by the USA
    April 1951: Truman dismisses Macarthur over a disagreement on how the war should be fought
    July 1953: War ends after 2 years, with peace at the 38th parallel
