Flooding

Cards (3)

  • Why plants that are not tolerant to hypoxia(oxygen deficient condition) will wilt if the soil becomes flooded?
When the soil is flooded, non-tolerant plants cannot switch to anaerobic respiration, much less ATP is produced in respiration as compared to tolerant plants.
The root cannot function properly in active uptake of minerals, consequently the absorption of water decreases. Yet transpiration continues.
When transpiration rate exceeds the rate of water absorption, mesophyll cells lose their turgidity
  • Similarities of cellular respiration of root tissues in tolerant plants grown in aerated and flooded soil
    1. Both use carbohydrate/ sugar as substrate
    2. Both undergoes glycolytic pathway and undergo substrate level phosphorylation
    3. Both produce energy in the form of ATP
    4. Both involve NAD/NADH as coenzyme
    5. Both produce CO2 as product
    6. Enzymatic reactions are involved
  • Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil or is present at or near the surface long enough to promote aquatic vegetation growth.
