  • There are 3 types of muscles: cardiac, smooth and skeletal
  • Cardiac muscle make up the heart walls and is responsible for controlling the heart
  • smooth muscles are found in the intestines and blood vessels, are involuntary
  • Skeletal muscles: muscles attached to the bone and allow you to move and perform, are voluntary
  • Where are smooth muscles found?
In the intestines and blood vessels
  • where are cardiac muscles found?
    In the heart
  • Which muscles are involuntary
    Cardiac and smooth muscles
  • what muscles are voluntary
    Skeletal
  • Muscles creating the movemtn is known as Agonist
  • Muscles that relaxes are known as the Antagonist
  • Muscles that contract to hold the surrounding bones still are known as stabilizers
  • Movement is when the muscles contract or Shorten. Muscles work in pairs so when 1 muscle contracts the other relaxes. This is known as Reciprocal Inhibition.
  • Superior is towards/closer to the head
  • Inferior is further/ away from the head
  • Anterior is towards the front of the body
  • Posterior is towards the back of the body
  • Medial is closer to the midline of the body
  • Lateral is further from the midline of the body
  • Proximal is closer to the attachment point
  • Distal is further from the attachment point
  • Define Superior?
    closer to the top/head
  • Define Anterior
Towards the front of the body
  • Define Posterior
Towards the back of the body
  • Define Medial
Closer to the midline of the body
  • Define Lateral
further away from the midline of the body
  • Define Proximal
A body part closer to the attachment point
  • Define Inferior
    Closer to the bottom/feet
  • what are the 4 roles of the skeletal system?
body movement, framework and protection, mineral storage, production of red blood cells.
  • what does framework and protection do
assist us to stand up right and to protect vital organs
  • where is the production of red blood cells
in bone marrow inside of long bones
  • how many bones are in the vertebral columm
    33, 24 unfused and 9 fused
  • Cervical has 7 unfused bones and is responsible for supporting the neck
  • Thoracic has 12 unfused bones allowing connection between spine and ribcage as well as protects heart and lungs
  • Lumbar has 5 unfused bones, largest vertebrae to hold the body's weight
  • Sacrum has 5 fused bones that are fused to the pelvis and distributes weight
  • Coccyx has 4 fused bones, provide site for muscle to attachment of the lower body
  • name all 5 parts of the vertebral column (in order)
    Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacrum, Coccyx
  • how many type of bones are there?
    5
  • name the 5 type of bones
short bones, long bones, sesamoid bones, irregular bones
  • define what short bones are
cube like in shape (similar width and length)
