Ageing Population Consequences

Cards (11)

  • Greater provision of services for elderly such as geriatric care, old folks homes etc. All of which place increased strain and costs on government health services.
  • Need to provide subsidised transport with OAP bus passes.
  • Increased strain also placed on health and welfare services.
  • Government has to provide money for pensions.
  • Fewer people are of working age (active population). There are fewer people paying tax & developing the economy.
  • Need to increase taxes for those of working age which can lead to
    resentment.
  • Possible need to raise the age of retirement, fewer jobs remaining for younger people.
  • Schools, nurseries, maternity wards and other services needed by
younger age groups may close because of lack of demand.
  • Possible redundancies in industries which may cater for goods needed by these younger groups as demand declines. E.g. pram making.
  • Possible future shortage of people of working age, in-migration may need to be encouraged which may lead to tension between different cultures and or ethnic groups.
  • The grey pound - elderly people have more money available to spend (mortgage probably paid off) so they can help boost the economy.
