    28th May 1830- Indian Removal Act- forces PI in eastern states to move wesr of the Mississippi River.
    30th June 1834-Indian Trade and Intercourse Act sets out frontier between USA and Indian Territory.
    2nd Feb 1848- US victory in Mexican American War.
    29th Feb 1851- Indian Appropriations Act, funds moving of PIs to reservations in modern day Oklahoma
  • The Dawes Severalty Act was passed on March 3rd 1887. It aimed to assimilate Native Americans into white society by breaking up communal land ownership and giving individual plots to families.
  • In 1868, Congress passed an act which established the Department of Interior as part of its reorganisation plan. The department would be responsible for managing federal lands and resources, including those belonging to indigenous peoples.
  • In 1868, Congress passed an act which established the Department of Interior's Bureau of Ethnology. The bureau was responsible for collecting information about indigenous peoples and their cultures.
  • 28th May 1830- Indian Removal Act

    The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was signed into law on May 28, 1830, by United States President Andrew Jackson. The law, as described by Congress, provided "for an exchange of lands with the Native Americans residing in any of the states or territories, and for their removal west of the river Mississippi. It pressured 46000 PIs in the east of America to move to lands west.
