+-ves of UK creation, amendment and elimination of bills

Cards (5)

  • Bills face a lot of debate in the House of Commons and Lords and is voted on, making it democratic and fair
  • Experts are often brought in to review a bill line by line and advise any amendments or possible issues through select committees
  • Arguably very democratic due to both chambers debating the bill. The unelected Lords do get a say but they have limited powers as the House of Commons has dominance and the Lords cannot reject the premise of the bill - only by convention
  • It's not just the government that can change the law - but they do have an unfair advantage due to winning a majority of seats which is often disproportionate to the number of votes they actually received. Plus laws can't usually be passed without government support and they may push their agenda
  • It takes a long time to pass even one bill due to Parliamentary ping pong which can dilute the bill. It only take one objection to prevent a bill from being passed, making it inefficient
