What is the general word equation for making a salt using an acid and an insoluble base?
Acid +
Base
→ Salt +
Water
What are the steps in the required practical to make a soluble salt (e.g. copper(II) sulfate)?
warm
dilute acid in a beaker (do not boil)
add an
excess
of the
insoluable base
and stir
continue adding until no more dissolves(acid is fully reacted)
filter
the mixture to remove excess base
evaporate some water using a
water bath
or bunsen burner
leave to
crystallise
(cool and allow crystals to form)
dry
the crystals
Why is the base added in excess during the practical?
To make sure all the
acid
reacts and no acid remains.
Why do you filter the mixture before evaporating?
To remove the
unreacted
insoluble
base
why is the acid warmed?
to speed up the
reaction
in a given experiment copper sulphate crystals are hydrated what does this mean?
the crystals have
water molecules
present and it allows them to have a blue colour
