  • The Central Nervous System (CNS) is comprised of the brain and spinal cord
  • The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is comprised of all the nerves coming off the spinal cord and into extremities and limbs
  • Functions of the Nervous System:
    • Controls and coordinates the body
    • Provides the ability to think and act
    • Allows awareness of emotion, sensation, memory, and surroundings
    • Communicates with the rest of the body through the spinal cord and nerves
    • Gives instructions to all parts of the body about what to do and when to do it
  • The brain is divided into three parts and is protected by the skull:
    • Cerebrum: Controls thinking, memory, speaking, senses, movement, and identifies information gathered by sense organs
    • Cerebellum: Controls balance, posture, and coordination
    • Medulla (Brainstem): Connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, and digestion
  • Nerves are bundles of axons that transmit information between different regions of the body.

  • The spinal cord
    • The spinal cord is the part of the nervous
    system that connects the brain to the rest of
    the nervous system.
    • The spinal cord runs down a tunnel of holes in
    your vertebral column.
    • A thick bundle of nerves, connecting your
    brain to the rest of your body
