Forgetting interference studies

Cards (2)

  • tulving and psotka- gave pps word lists to remember, recall was around 70% at first but after each new list recall worsened, suggesting recall of prev lists interfered with their ability to remember the new ones
research support for proactive interference, however word lists are not representative of real life, lacking mundane realism, word lists are not important to individual so is not reflective of real instances of forgetting
  • retroactive interference- baddeley and hitch- tested rugby players recall of teams week by week, found that players forgot the names of the teams more often if they had played other teams since- this suggests the new teams they played interfered with their ability to remember previous ones
retroactive- 'out with the old in with the new'- lack of control over extraneous variables as real life setting, players may be familiar with other players on different teams through reading about them in the media
