  • Kruchshev sent in the Red Army and stopped riots. He tried to please them with a new leader, Nagy
  • Imre Nagy:
    • wanted voting and dictatorship
    • asked for political prisoners to be free
    • asked krushchev to remove communist troops
  • In Nov 1956, Nagy told soviets that Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact.

    Krushchev felt that other countries may copy Hungary, ruining power for Soviet Union

    -America didn't help because they didnt want to interfere - it was too risky
  • Short term consequences:
    • It failed
    • America didn't support
    • 20k Hungarians killed
    • Huge threat to soviet-run countries
    • Nagy executed
  • Long term consequences
    • Krushchev seemed more powerful
    • a new stronger leader in Hungary
    • showed USA wouldn't help - krushchev could be more aggressive
    • made USA look weak
