  • Stages of stress response:
    • Stage 1: Alarm
    • Amygdala is activated
    • Cortisol is released
    • Body reacts to stress

    • Stage 2: Resistance
    • Resists cortisol and stress
    • Adaptation to stress
    • Sustained release of cortisol to maintain arousal/homeostasis
    • Stage 3: Exhaustion
    • Body starts to give up on stress
    • Depletion of body's resources
    • Compromised immune system (depleted)
  • Two types of personalities in response to stress:
    • Type A:
    • Competitive, self-critical, easily angered and stressed
    • Strive towards goals without a sense of joy or accomplishment
    • Likes a checklist and easily stressed
    • Type B:
    • Flexible, go with the flow, less competitive, more relaxed
    • Patient, not prone to aggression, works slow and steadily
    • Enjoys actual achievements and not easily stressed

    • Internal Locus of Control:
    • Awareness of what can be controlled and what can't
    • Behavior and cognitive factors
    • External Locus of Control:
    • Belief that control over what happens is not possible
