Formation Table

Cards (5)

  • Formation table: the energy change (enthalpy released or absorbed) when 1 mol of a compound is formed from its elements at standard conditions - SATP - measured in KJ/mol
  • Formation reaction:
    element + element -> compound
    • ∆H = + : endothermic
    • ∆H = -: exothermic
  • Formation reaction can also like combustion or corrosion equations
  • Decomposition: the opposite of formation (flip the sign)
    • compound -> element + element
  • Thermal stability: the tendancy of a compound to resist decomposition when heated. The more exothermic the formation value (the smaller the number) the more thermal stability
    • Big -# = lots of energy to decompose
