Medications

• Dexamethasone[Decadron®]: Long-acting

  Pharm: corticosteroids

  Therapeutic: anti-asthmatics, corticosteroids
• Dexamethasone[Decadron®]: Long-acting

  Dose: 0.5-2mg/kg/day divided every 6 hour, 0.08-0.3 mg/kg/day(anti-inflammatory)

  Action: suppress inflammation and the normal immune response

  Indication: cerebral edema

  Contraindication: active untreated infections, lactation

  Adverse effects: hypertension, petechiae, adrenal suppression, anorexia, nausea, peptic ulceration

  Education: Do not stop suddenly, consult health care provider if severe abd pain or tarry stools occur
• Prednisone(Winipred®) 

  Pharm: corticosteroids

  Therapeutic: anti-asthmatics, corticosteroids
• Prednisone(Winipred®) 

  Dose: Adult(5-60mg/day) Child(2 mg/kg/day)

  Action: suppress inflammation and the normal immune response
• Prednisone(Winipred®) 

  Indication:systemically and locally in a wide variety of chronic diseases(inflammatory, allergic), prevention of organ rejection in transplant surgery, asthma

  Contraindication: active untreated infections, lactation

  Adverse effects: hypertension, petechiae, adrenal suppression, anorexia, nausea, peptic ulceration

  Education:Do not stop suddenly, consult health care provider if severe abd pain or tarry stools occur
• Dimenhydrinate(Benadryl®)

  Pharm: 

  Therapeutic: allergy, cold and cough remedies, antihistamines, antitussives
• Dimenhydrinate(Benadryl®)

  Dose: Adult (25-50mg) children (6.25-12.5)

  Action: Significant CNS depressant and anticholinergic properties, decrease symptoms of histamine excess. Prevention of motion sickness. Suppression of cough
• Dimenhydrinate(Benadryl®)

  Indication: relief of allergic symptoms caused by histamine release, prevention of motion sickness

  Contraindication: hypersensitivity, Lactation
• Dimenhydrinate(Benadryl®)

  Adverse effects: anorexia, dry mouth, drowsiness

  Nursing con: 

  Education: may cause drowsiness, may cause dry mouth, sleep hygiene techniques
• Polyethylene Glycol[Restoralax®]: Laxative

  Pharm- osmotics

  Thera- laxatives
• Polyethylene Glycol[Restoralax®]: Laxative

  Action- drawing in water into the lumen of GI tract, treatment of occasional constipation

  Adverse- urticaria, abd bloating, cramping, flatulence nausea
• Polyethylene Glycol[Restoralax®]: Laxative

  Contra- GI obstruction, bowel perforation gastric retention

  education/consideration- take as directed, pt 2-4 days to produce bowel movement, 

  should not be used for more than 2 weeks
• Combination of tramadol/acetaminophen [Tramacet®]:Mild opioid analgesic Pharm- opioid analgesic combo

  Thera- analgesic 
• Tramacet®

  Action- inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins, alleviate moderate-severe pain

  Adverse- hives, seizure, dry mouth, SJS
• Tramacet®

  Contra- decrease RR,asthma, decrease fertility

  education/consideration- breastfeeding not recommended(crosses placenta, neonatal withdrawal)
• Erythromycin(Erythrocin®)

  Pharm- macrolides

  Thera- anti-infective
• Erythromycin[Erythrocin®]

  Action- suppress protein synthesis at level of bacteria, used in pregnancy for skin to skin

  Structure infections

  Adverse- torsades de pointes, ventricular arrhythmias, c-diff, n/v, phlebitis
• Erythromycin[Erythrocin®]

  Contra- assess for infection, LFTs, bowel function

  education/consideration- may cause n/v, diarrhea, severe abd pain
• Phytonadione[Vitamin K®]:

  Pharm- fat-soluble vitamin

  Thera- coagulation, antidotes
• Phytonadione[Vitamin K®]:

  Action- acts as vitamin k replacement, prevent hemorrhaging in neonates

  Adverse- hyperbilirubinemia, pain at injection site
• Phytonadione[Vitamin K®]:

  Contra- hypersensitivity 

  education/consideration- babies have sterile guts thats why they need vit k because they dont make enough 
• Rh0(D)[Rhogam®, WinRH0®]:

  Pharm- immune globulin

  Thera- vaccines, blood product
• Rh0(D)[Rhogam®, WinRH0®]:

  Action- prevent production of anti Rh antibodies(Rh - pts), Ph- mom with Rh+ baby

  Adverse- N/V, diarrhea, rash, acute renal failure, anemia
• Rh0(D)[Rhogam®, WinRH0®]:

  Contra- hypersensitivity

  education/consideration- protect future infants, Rh+ blood in mothers system with attack future fetuses
• Prenatal vitamins with folic acid

  Pharm- water soluble vitamin

  Thera- antiariemcs, vitamins
• Prenatal vitamins with folic acid

  Action- required for protein synthesis, red blood cell function, necessary for normal fetal development

  Adverse- rash, irritability, difficult sleep, malaise, confusion
• Prenatal vitamins with folic acid

  education/consideration- in early pregnancy needed to prevent neural tube defects
