  • Circulatory System - Also known as the CardiovascularSytem
  • Circulatory System - Consists of 3 components namely: BloodVessel, Blood, and Heart
  • Heart - Powerful muscular organ
  • Heart is covered with a Thin-Layer called Pericardium
  • The Heart has 4 Chambers
  • The walls are covered with cardiac muscle or myocardium
  • Atria/Atrium - upper thin-walled part of the heart
  • RightAtrium - COLLECTS DEOXYGENATED blood from the body
  • LeftAtrium - RECIEVES OXYGENATED blood from the lungs
  • Ventricles - Lower thick-walled part of the heart
  • RightVentricle - pumps DEOXYGENATED blood out of the heart to the LUNGS
  • LeftVentricle - pumps OXYGENATED blood out of the heart to all parts of the body
  • Valves - prevents the backflow of the blood
  • TricuspidValve - located between right atrium & right ventricle
  • BicuspidValve/MitralValve - Located between left atrium & left ventricle
  • AtrioventricularValve - Separates atrium from ventricle
  • SemilunarValve - separates ventricle from artery
  • PulmonaryValve - Let the blood pumped from from the heart to the lungs
  • AorticValve - Let the blood pumped from the heart to the rest of the body
  • The tightening of heart muscles produces the HEARTBEAT or CARDIACCYCLE
  • CardiacCycle has 2 parts: Systole & Diastole
  • Systole - Contraction of the heart
  • Diastole - Relaxation of the heart
  • Sphygmomanometer - used for measuring blood pressure
  • 120/80 is the normal blood pressure
  • Pulse - Wave of contraction transmitted along the arteries
  • The normal cardiac cycle at rest is 0.8secs
  • BloodVessels - A tube that serves ad the passageway of blood
  • BloodVessels has 3 kinds: Arteries, Capilliaries, & Veins
  • Arteries - Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart
  • Arteries deliver oxygen-rich blood to different parts of the body except pulmonary arteries
  • The largest artery is aorta
  • Smallest artery is called arterioles
  • Veins - carry deoxygenated blood from different parts of the body back to the heart
  • Smallest veins - Venules
  • Largest Veins - Vena Cava
  • 2 Large Veins join the Right Atrium
  • Superior Vena Cava - brings the blood from the head & arms
  • Inferior Vena Cava - Brings blood from the lower parts of the body
  • Blood - Liquid part is called plasma, and suspended in it are blood cells
