  • Pure substance - consists of only one material
  • Mixture - consists of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
  • Element - a pure substance which cannot be split into simpler substances by any chemical process
  • Compound - a substance containing two or more different types of elements, bonded chemically in fixed proportions
  • Solution - homogeneous mixture of two or more substances where one is usually a liquid
  • Suspension - a substance, usually a liquid, containing a minute but visible particles floating in it
  • Colloid - a substance, usually a liquid, containing macromolecules held floating substance. The particles do not settle.
  • Solvent - liquid capable of dissolving another substance
  • Solute - a substance that dissolves in a solvent
