  • Paradox: a statement that seems self-contradictory but may contain truth
  • Pathos: emotional appeal used to persuade readers/listeners
  • Sibilance: use of sibilant sounds such as /s/ and /z/
  • Rhetorical question: a question asked not for information but to make a point
  • Anaphora: repeating the same word at the beginning of successive sentences, clauses, phrases, etc.
  • Euphemism: substitution of an agreeable expression for one considered unpleasant or offensive
  • Antithesis: a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else
  • Simile: comparison using 'like' or 'as'. E.g. She was like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day
