  • there are six important properties of water:
    1. it is a metabolite in metabolic reactions such as the condensation reaction
    2. it is a solvent where metabolic reactions occur , i.e in the cytoplasm
    3. has a relatively high heat capacity, buffers temperature change allowing large bodies to maintain relatively stable temp
    4. it has a relatively high latent heat capacity , losing water has a cooling effect
    5. strong cohesion between water molecules
    6. ice is less dense than water , allows organisms in lakes to live despite freezing over.
  • inorganic ions and there uses:
    • hydrogen ions change PH
    • iron ions are inside haemoglobin
    • sodium ions are used in the co-transport of amino acids and glucose
    • phosphate ion are used in ATP and DNA
  • Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleotide derivative formed from one molecule of ribose, one molecule of adenine and three phosphate groups .
  • ATP hydrolyses to adenosine diphosphate and an inorganic phosphate group through catalysis by the enzyme ATP hydrolase
  • hydrolysis of ATP provides energy.
  • the hydrolysis of ATP releases an inorganic phosphate , this can then be used to phosphorylate other compounds which increases their reactivity.
  • ATP is resynthesized during photosynthesis and respiration by a condensation reaction of ADP and Pi which is catalysed by ATP synthase.
