What is a Wave

• Sound is a longitudinal and mechanical wave
• Sound needs a medium because it cannot travel through empty space (a vacuum)
• Sound is caused by a vibration of particles back and forth

  • This is the same direction the medium moves
• Longitudinal waves move perpendicular, while transverse waves move parallel to the direction of the wave.
