  • The interdependence started in the 1950's with the West Indian Federation. which continues today with organizations like CARICOM and the Association of Caribbean States(ACS)
  • West Indian Federation was established in 1958, but was abolished in 1962 and its purpose was to unite the islands

    • t&t and Jamaica were the largest members and were expected to bear most of the costs. this was unfair
    • the smaller countries feared that the bigger countries would try and dominate the federation
    • there were disagreements as to where the capital would be placed
    • jamaica objected to the colonial status of the federation
    • the most respected leaders at the time did not want to lead the federation and preffered to just run their own countires
    • in 1961 jamaica held a referendum and voted to be pulled out the federation which led to Dr. Eric Williams famous speech 1 from 10 leaves 0
  • CARIFTA -Caribbean Free Trade Association, a regional organization of 15 countries in the Caribbean. was formed in 1965 and lead to CARICOM
