  • Priestly Element: Dominican spirituality emphasizes loyalty to the Church, the Pope, and the truths of faith. It centers on God, Christ, the Mass, and Sacraments. Dominic's devotion to Mary is integral, especially through the rosary, which combines devotion with theology and leads to contemplation.
  • Apostolic Element: Dominicans are called to preach and spread the Gospel, following the example of Christ and the Apostles. They must be missionaries, conversing with God in contemplation and sharing the fruits of their contemplation with others.
    1. Doctrinal Element: Study of sacred truth is essential for Dominicans. St. Dominic stressed the importance of studying the Bible to understand and preach the truths of faith with love and zeal.
    1. Blending of Elements: Dominican spirituality doesn't separate these aspects but integrates them. The monastic, priestly, and apostolic elements work together, with love of God leading to love of neighbor and active evangelization, following the example of Christ and the Apostles.

  • PRAYER
    • In faithful response to the invitation of St. Dominic, the solemn, common celebration of Mass and the liturgy of the hours remain the center of a  Dominican daily life.
  • STUDY
    The primary object of Dominican study is the Word of God revealed through Scripture, Tradition, and the natural world, whose fullest manifestation is the very person of Christ himself.
  • Blending of elements
    • There is no dichotomy in Dominican spirituality. Its monastic,contemplative, and priestly constituents, focusing on love of God,fructify in the apostolate, centering on love of neighbor. The evangelicalvocation vitalizes the priestly and contemplative vocations, directingthem to their logical and highest development, exemplified by Christ andthe Apostles
  • COMMUNITY
    • The communal dimension of Dominican life is a challenge to be of "one mind and one heart in God."  Profession into the Order of Preachers includes the promise
    o hold all things in common.
  • St. Thomas
    • Famous for his 5 arguments to prove the existence of God
    • Thomas was born in 1225 in a castle of roccasecca located in sicily
  • St. Thomas Wrote the Summa Theologica which describes how Christ reconciles the relationship of humans with God.
    • In 1239, after nine years in this sanctuary of spiritual and cultural life, young Thomas was forced to return to his family when the emperor expelled the monks because they were too obedient to the pope.
  • In the early days of the Order, Dominican Friars were known as "preaching brothers" because they traveled from town to town spreading the word of God. Today, many Dominican priests continue this tradition of itinerant ministry.
