why they’re considered successful

  • A final reason why some PG might be more successful that others is access to funding. If a group has a lot of money to support their campaigns then they will be able to do them on a larger scale, which might attract more attention. For example, Greenpeace, who recently set up a blockade in the North Sea to stop harmful fishing techniques, are the largest environmental group in the World. This allows them to plan large-scale operations which will have a greater impact
  • Another reasons why a PG might be more successful is if people are sympathetic towards their cause. This is because if the public care about the issue the PG is trying to support they might be more likely to back them, which will put more pressure on Governments to make changes. For example, Extinction Rebellion has protested around Scotland and outside the Scottish Parliament building. Many people, especially young people support their causes as they will be the ones most affected by climate change
  • One reason a PG might be more successful is if its members are experts in their field (insider). This is because if a PG made up of experts on the issue it campaigns about is more likely to: Be relied upon by the government to implement whatever policy is chosen. Be interviewed by the media. Be trusted by the public. For example, BMA (Scotland) has traditionally been able to make use of the expertise of its members. The Scottish Government has worked with the BMA and has introduced policies, such as banning smoking in cars with children, based on their recommendations.
