    • India was the most important to Britain of the territories in the empire -> The Jewel in the Crown
    • Britain arrived in India in the 1700s. It was highly populated and had complex governments and states, so British rule developed through military force and alliances with Indian rulers
    • 1800s - British rule in India was strong. Tiny number of British soldiers and administrators in India. Indian civil servants did majority of day to day work
    • Late 1800s, thousands of middle class Indians who worked in the administration- spoke english and had english education
    • Churchill had english to be part of their education
    • Churchill was furious of India wanting to become a domain status and wanting to govern itself
    • Churchill believed giving India its free status would weaken the Empire
