It could also be said that part of the reason the Hungarian people revolted is because they believed that they would receive promised support from the USA and Western countries.
The West had relentlessly encouraged Eastern European countries to rise up against communist rule, and the Hungarians may have assumed that when they asked the USA for support, they may have actually received some.
However despite actively encouraging countries in the East to rise above communism, there was not much the USA could actually do without risking a full scale war with the Soviet Union.
