Impact on Relations

• Khrushchev's position was strengthened, not only amongst the Eastern European countries who had learnt their lesson not to rebel, but also when faced with the USA, as it was made clear that despite the USA's constant talk about Eastern European countries rebelling against communism, there wasn't anything that the USA would do to ensure this happened.

  Khrushchev became more confident in dealing with the USA, understanding that they would not impose military action.
