  • general adaption syndrome describes the physiological changes that the body goes through as it responds to stress.
  • these changes have 3 stages that occur (A R E)
    • alarm
    • resistance
    • exhaustion
  • alarm stage - initial reaction to stressor such as increased oxygen - this reaction can be either physical or psychological
  • resistance stage - if the stress carries on inside the body, then resources such as hormones are continually used up more than they should
    signs of the resistance stage include irritability, poor concentration and frustration
  • exhaustion stage - the body uses up all its resources to resist the stress and the flight or fight response comes back - the immune system is damaged and heart disease is more likely because of it
    signs of exhaustion include fatigue, burnout, decreased stress tolerance
