  • Messiah
    • Anointed one.
    • Sent by God to save humanity.
    • Long awaited for the deliver.
    • Old Testament said the Messiah would be of David’s line and suffer (Isaiah - suffering servant)
    • Peter said Jesus is the Messiah - salvation and atonement.
  • Saviour
    • Brings forgiveness for sin - saving humanity from effects of sin (eternal punishment and damnation).
    Death on the cross (crucifixtion) he atones for our sins.
    His blood sacrifice is offered for the forgiveness of our sins.
    Death and resurrection, Christians can share in eternal life.
  • Word
    • Jesus = ’the word’ (Johns gospel).
    • Word in Greek is ‘logos’ - shows the belief that Jesus was with God at creation.
    • The word became flesh - incarnation.
    • He is the creative power of God.
    He was with God at the beginning through Jesus all things were made.
  • Incarnation - ‘made flesh’
    God became flesh in Jesus.
    Jesus was both GOD and MAN.
    He was HUMAN and DIVINE
  • Birth
    Jesus’ birth - the Nativity
    Matthew‘s gospel - Joseph’s story (God speaks to him in dreams), Jesus visited by the Magi (brings gifts), emphasis on Jesus as king, is the fulfilment of prophecy.
    Luke’s gospel - Mary’s story (angel Gabriel), Shepherd‘s visit angel appears to Mary told that the saviour has been born.
  • Ascension Disciples went to Galilee, where Jesus told them to go - when they saw him, they worshipped him but some doubted. He told them ‘go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ While blessing them, Jesus taken up to heaven before the eyes of his disciples.
    He gave the great commission.
    Hope of eternal life.
  • Death - crucifixion
    • On Good Friday.
    • Arrested by Sanhedrin and taken to place called Golgotha (place of the skull).
    • He was mocked and spat at.
    • They crowned him with thorns and whipped him.
    • Two criminals were crucified to the left and right.
    • After suffering he questioned God - “why have you forsaken me?”
    • Curtain of the temple was torn in two.
    • His suffering atoned for our sins. - He took our sin upon his shoulders.
    • His death opened the way to salvation.
  • Resurrection
    • Sabbath was over Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices.
    • Stone covering the entrance was rolled away - she ran to get Peter.
    • John’s gospel states Mary saw Jesus but thought he was the gardener, but recognises when he calls her name.
    • Luke’s gospel - Jesus appeared to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. (Thomas had doubted until Jesus told him to touch his wound)
    • He spent 40 days with them.
    • Death is not the end.
  • Salvation and atonement - through the death of Jesus humanity’s sins are forgiven once and for all time, now humans can enjoy eternal life in God’s presence.
