Displacement

Cards (4)

  • Displacement = A chemical reaction where a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound. Can be used to deduce the relative reactivity of the halogens
  • To understand displacement reactions, think of them as money. Would Sodium(£10) Bromide swap sodium for £20 (chlorine) or £5 (iodine)?
  • Sodium bromide + Chlorine = Sodium Chloride + Bromine (Cl is more reactive than Bromine, so displaces Bromine)
  • Sodium Iodide + Chlorine = Sodium Chloride + Iodine (Cl is more reactive than I, so displaces I)
