Newtons First Law of motion

Cards (9)

  • What do Newton's laws of motion describe?
The effects that forces have on the motion of an object
  • What is Newton's first law of motion?
If the forces are balanced, there is no resultant force. The object will keep doing what it is doing, for example, stay stationary or move at a constant velocity.
  • According to Newtons first law, if there is no resultant force on an object what will the object be doing?
    Remain stationary
  • What happens when there is no resultant force on an object?
Both the speed and direction will stay the same, it will continue to move at the same velocity.
  • What happens when the forces are balanced?
There is no resultant force so its direction and speed will stay the same.
  • When will the velocity of an object change?
If a resultant force acts on it.
  • What is a resistive force?
Equal force acting in the opposite direction of the other force. For example, friction in the air.
  • What does a resultant force cause an object to do?
Change its speed (accelerate or decelerate)
  • What can a resultant force do?
Change the direction of an object.
