  • Immigration:
    process of people establishing homes, and often citizensip, in a country that is not their native country
  • Emigration: the act of leaving one's own country to settle permanently in another; moving abroad
  • Push factor:
    Fators that make people leave their home country
  • Pull factor:
    Factors that attract immigrants to a country
  • Refugee:
    A person who seeks refuge in another country because of danger or persecution in his or her home country
  • Economic Immigrant:
    Someone who emigrates from one region to another, to seek and increased quality of living because the conditions or job opportunities in their home country are insufficient
  • Humanitarian Immigrant:
    Immigrants who emigrate because they are forced to move
  • Provinicial Nomination Program:
    Economic immigration program that nominates people for permanent residence in Alberta
  • Demographic:
    To do with the characteristics of populations
  • Labour force growth:
    The growth of the labour force or the number of people that can work
  • Family class immigrants:
    People who are sponsored by close relatives to come to the country

    1. Law says who is allowed into Canada
  • Immigration Policies -
    1. Policy sets the procedures for evaluating potential citizens
    2. Says how many immigrants are allowed each year

    • No discrimination
    • Replaced earlier laws that favored British immigrants and barred Chinese and Indian immigrants
    • Established four categories of immigrants

  • Provinicial Nomination Program:
    • Policy that aims to increase the likelihood that immigrants will settle in provinces that need their labor skills  
  • Canada-Quebec Accord 1991
    1. Affirms the French Language
    2. Quebec gets first choice of immigrants who speak French
    3. Allows Quebec to require immigrants to attend French schools
