Pre-Industrial Britain

• Mob football was participated by lower class males. It had vague rules, only restricted on murder and manslaughter.
• Cock fighting involves gambling. This involved males from both classes. Upper class would get the cockerels and lower class would get the money.
• Pedestrianism is competitive walking and involves gambling. Lower class compete whilst upper class sponser them. Again just males.
• Real tennis is a mixed between squash and tennis put together. Only upper class was involved.
• Fox hunting involves dogs and horses so therefore only involved upper class.
• Lower class sports are suited as they do not cost or use anything they do not have to play.
• Upper class sports are suited as they use money that they do have and animals which can be afforded.
• Cricket was played together by both upper and lower class. Upper class would bat and lower class would field.
• Females were seen as the weaker sex and therefore activities had to be much less strenuous and not dangerous. They had very little rights and opportuniities. Smock racing and archery were female only sports.
• Law and orderr took little place in 1850s. Lower class were very violent a lot of fighting. Upper class although had rules, there was no authority to put it in place.
• Lower class were uneducated so had no rules whereas upper class where educated so had more rules.
• Lower class had very little income whereas upper class had high income from aristocracy.
• Transport was only walking and horse & cart because everything was local.
• Lower clas has very little time due to long working hours (72 hour weeks). Upper class could take part leisurely due to no work commitments.
