ch2.2 cell structure

Cards (17)

  • cell theory: all organisms are made up of cells which are the basic unit of life and arise from pre-existing cells
  • cell/plasma membrane: outer boundary of the cell that regulates the transport of materials
  • cytoplasm: jelly like substance inside the cell and all the organelles suspended with in it
  • cytosol: fluid part of the cytoplasm
  • cytoskeleton: consists of microfilaments and microtubules that give cell shape and assists the movement of materials, organelles or the whole cell
  • organelles: microscopic structures within the cell
  • nucelus: control centre of the cell that contains genetic material
  • nuclear membrane: separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm
  • nuclear pore: gaps in the nuclear membrane that allows large molecules to enter and leave nucleus
  • nucleolus: manufactures and stores RNA
  • ribosome: amino acids join at the ribosomes to create proteins
  • endoplasmic reticulum: used for transporting and storing materials (mainly proteins)
  • lysosome: contains digestive enzymes able to break down substances and worn out organelles
  • Golgi body: modifies proteins and packages them in vesicles for secretion from the cell
  • mitochondria: site of aerobic respiration for energy production
  • centrioles: pair of cylindrical structures involved in reproduction of the cell
  • inclusions: substances that are not part of the cell structure but are found in the cytoplasm
