Reproductive system: a collection of organs and a network of hormone production that work together for reproduction
Reproduction: the process by which organisms make more organisms like themselves
Female reproductive system: a collection of female internal and external body parts responsible for reproduction
Main functions of the female reproductive system:
Intercourse
Reproduction
Urination
Pregnancy
Childbirth
Menstruation
Two kinds of sex cells (gametes) involved:
Male gamete: sperm cell
Female gamete: egg cell (ovum)
Vulva: the external part of the female reproductive organs, means "covering"
Mons Pubis: the fleshy area located just above the top of the vaginal opening where pubic hair is formed
LabiaMinora: two pairs of small skin flaps that surround the vaginal opening, soft inner liplike folds of tissue to protect sensitive structures within the vulva
LabiaMajora: two pairs of large skin flaps that surround the vaginal opening, typically covered with pubic hair and contain sweat and oil-secreting glands
Clitoris: a small sensory organ located toward the front of the vulva where the folds of the labia join
Urethra: canal that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body
Vagina (Vaginal Opening): about 3 to 5 inches long in a grown woman, has muscularwalls that can expand and contract, serves three purposes:
Where the penis is inserted during sexual intercourse
Pathway for a baby during childbirth (birth canal)
Route for menstrual blood (period) to leave the body from the uterus
Cervix: means "neck", has a very small opening, can expand during childbirth to allow a baby to pass
Uterus: has a thick lining and muscular walls, the strongest muscles in the female body that can expand and contract to accommodate a growing fetus and help push the baby out during labor
Fallopian Tube: there are 2, each attached to a side of the uterus, narrow tubes that are passageways from the ovaries to the uterus
Ovary: produce, store, and release eggs into the fallopian tubes in the process called ovulation, each ovary measures about 1½ to 2 inches in a grown woman, produce hormones (Estrogen and Progesterone)
Oogenesis is the process by which an egg develops from a primordial germ cell, with only one becoming mature enough to be released during ovulation.
The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that produce eggs.
The menstrual cycle begins on day 1 when bleeding starts, lasts approximately 3-7 days, and occurs every 28 days or so.
If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum breaks down and menstruation starts again.
If fertilization occurs, the embryo implants itself into the uterine lining and begins developing into a fetus.
Each month, one follicle matures and releases an egg through ovulation.
In the luteal phase, progesterone levels rise, preparing the uterine wall for pregnancy.
If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum breaks down, leading to menstruation.
Menstruation occurs when the uterine lining sheds due to decreased estrogen and progesterone levels.
Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menses due to ovarian failure.
The ovaries are responsible for producing eggs (ova) and releasing them during ovulation.
